One possible theory is that toward the end of 1853 all existing dies had been used and instead of producing a completely new one, a die that had already punched with the \"54\" logo punch was partially effaced and the \"old\" 53 was punched over it. This is a very early die state showing much more of the 4 within the upper loop of the 3 as well as the diagnostic that is most easily picked up on the die, the double right arrow shaft. The 5 is also doubled, thereby making it an 1853/54.
