Palmyra, MO - City of Palmyra 50 Cents November 18, 1862. PCGS About New 50 Apparent. A very rare remainder note from this Union-controlled town north of Hannibal, Missouri. Shortly prior to the engraved date of this municipal scrip note, Palmyra was the site of the public execution of ten Confederate prisoners ordered by Provost Marshall William R. Strachan, acting for Colonel John McNeil. The captured Confederate sympathizers (some were not necessarily combatants) were executed on October 18, 1862, as retribution for the disappearance of captured Palmyra carpenter Andrew Allsman. Those ten had no proven, direct culpability. A public notice was posted on October 8 ordering Confederate General Porter's men, who had raided Palmyra in September, to return the carpenter within ten days or face the execution of ten of their men. When Allsman did not appear, the executions were carried out. The note is printed on white bond paper with the imprint Lith. Ed. Mendel, Chicago, ILL. at the base. Under the arced title, a whittling boy is seated near cows, adapted from 1850s Obsolete currency. At the left, the Freedom statue is beneath a FIFTY counter. At the right, a Washington portrait is below a \"50\" counter. Like many municipal notes, this was receivable for taxes. Noted as \"Hole Punch Cancelled,\" with one hole above the mayor's signature line, and with \"Minor Mounting Remnants on Back.\" There was a 25 cent remainder from the issuer sold in the Schingoethe Part 3 sale in June 2005.
