The ancient town, with its temple dedicated to Wepwawet, the local canine deity, probably lies under the modern one. The necropolis was excavated by Emile Chassinat in 1903. The most important periods at Asyut were the Herakleopolitan (c. 2130–c. 1970 BCE), when Asyut supported the northern kings against Thebes, and the Middle Kingdom (c. 2008–c. 1630 BCE), although two Ramesside tombs have also been found.
