It was constructed and decorated primarily during the reigns of Amenophis III and Ramesses II (reg c. 1279–c. 1213 BCE). Amenophis III built the original stone Temple of Amun on a platform. He later added a court and laid the foundations for a colonnade, which was completed and largely decorated by Tutankhamun. Ramesses II added the first court and pylon. The sanctuary of the temple, in which the bark of Amun was placed, was rebuilt by Alexander the Great (reg 332–323 BCE), with reliefs in typical early Ptolemaic style. Amenemope, the aspect of the god Amun worshipped at Luxor, was a local form of the fertility god, and his sanctuary is situated on an area of high ground taken to be the exact location of the primeval mound of creation. Luxor was also considered to be the birthplace of Amon-Re, the aspect of Amun worshipped at Karnak. Queen Hatshepsut was probably responsible for much of the theology of Luxor temple, especially its emphasis on the king as the physical offspring and earthly heir of Amun. The reliefs on the walls of the temple depict popular participation in the public processions held in the more profane areas (in front of the pylon and gateways and inside the open courts). The reliefs also show episodes from the cult performed in the restricted inner parts of the temple.
