The first of these was the Kitano Shrine (also known as Tenmangū) in Kyoto, established in the 10th century to enshrine the vengeful ghost of Sugawara no michizane, a distinguished statesman, scholar and poet. A covered stone passageway (ishi no ma) connects the main sanctuary and worship hall. Both buildings are roofed separately, creating complex roof lines, a feature reflected in the term yatsumune zukuri ('eight roofs construction'). The interaction between Buddhist and Shinto architecture is evident in this style, particularly in the organization of the buildings and in the curvilinear forms of roof eaves and gables, such as the karahafu ('undulating barge-board') that covers the canopy over the worship-hall staircase.
