He shares that the “pleasantest” part of the evening was the presence of four of the Hargraves. Rob[er]t updated him on where “the girls” were, and William goes on to recount the details of their kidnapping. By order of the Provost Marshall, the girls were brought to William via an ambulance following an order by Major General Dodge for their “return” to him as Union Refugees and placed under his guardianship. They are happy to be back and Rob[er]t is pleased at their return. Mary Hargrave is in the hospital, and “Mo” and Nelly are sick with “a cold, or ophthalmia” but otherwise well. William writes that “Louisa, Archie’s wife, went up to her old master’s, and died there last Sunday” leading “the colored folks” to suspect foul play, though he thinks it unlikely. William sends Tom love from the children at the party. He says that he and family members are well, and that Etta visited today.
