Proof. PCGS Choice About New 58 Apparent.  This $1 proof is a great rarity, and the last available from the Newman Collection two-note sheet. According to Chester L. Krause, the bank had no office or building. However, a $1 issued note was sold in the Krause Collection auctions. The bankers supposedly moved to Princeton, Wisconsin in 1860 and closed the Montello operation. The bank printed only $1-$2 sheets engraved by Wellstood, Hay & Whiting, New-York. This is a handsome India paper proof. Liberty and Justice are seated at top center with a titled banner at their feet. A Buchanan portrait is at the left end between the dies. The base vignette of a badger shows its sharp teeth. A red protector ONE is across the bottom center. As usual, the plated proofs in Haxby and the Krause specialty book are from the Wisconsin Historical Society. This $1 proof is the only example in private hands to our knowledge. Noted as \"Hole Punch Cancelled\" as made and with \"Minor Edge Damage at LR Corner.\" A flaw is academic as this $1 Montello presents another important and unique opportunity. Ex: Eric P.
