PCGS Very Fine 30.  In 1781, the Bank of North America became the first bank chartered by Congress. It commenced issuing demand notes in 1782, launching the Obsolete banknote issuing period. The earliest stockholders included several Founding Fathers. It was referred to as \"The Bank\" early on, due to its official functions involving the federal government. The bank issued several series, evolving by using different engraving imprints and styles over eight decades to thwart counterfeiters and issue superbly crafted notes. It eventually became the National Bank of North America in 1864. It \"exists\" today within Wells Fargo and its acquisition of the Wachovia several years ago. This is an important contemporary counterfeit type and one of the earliest dated Obsolete banknotes, genuine or counterfeit. This second series and type is listed in The Early Paper Money of America (5th edition, page 362). A choice condition \"B\" position contemporary counterfeit. The original, without imprint, is copied well. Engraved obligations cover most of the note. At upper left is an oval counter \"20\" encircled by thirteen stars, and there is a dark oval die with \"XX\" in left center. At the far left end is perpendicular TWENTY in shaded letters covered by an ornately engraved BANK. Note the \"B\" plate letter is printed in red ink and the note has a plain back making this an unlisted variant of PA-465 C214. Most notes of this rare type have printed \"mirror-image\" backs. Eric P. Newman studied these observed variants and obtained a few examples of this type. They indicate different counterfeit plates were used for this series and denomination. There are no genuine issued notes known and there is one \"A\" position face proof plated in Haxby. Noted as \"Pen Cancelled\" consisting of an \"X\" in the center. The Newman Plate note, with a 1792 date and printed back, realized $3,290 graded PCGS Very Fine 30 in Newman Part VII. This unlisted variant is bright, well margined, and certainly its equal, if not its better.  Ex: Eric P.
