They were one of the most ancient, powerful and wealthy of patrician families of Venice. Over the centuries the Contarini family provided Venice with eight doges and numerous high-ranking officials. The genealogy of the casada (clan) is complex, with families belonging to about a dozen distinct branches, some of which were not directly related. Over the centuries, branches of the Contarini constructed approximately 25 palaces in Venice, although not all now bear the Contarini name. The most celebrated palace is the Ca' d'Oro (c. 1421), built for Marin Contarini (1386–1441), a member of the S Felice and S Sofia branch of the family.
