This is another fascinating Chouteau note payable \"in Silver Dollars legal money of the United States.\" In this instance, he guarantees the sum for Joseph Leblond who will pay Antoine Cheni?. It is interesting to note that silver dollars were not minted for general use after 1803, and at this time all hard specie was hoarded. The Missouri Historical Review, vol. 15 lists Antoine Cheni? as having 10 shares ($1,000) in the Second Bank of Missouri. He was from Montreal, resided in St. Louis as early as 1795, and after working as a clerk in the fur trade, he started his own bakery. Witness Joseph Leblond was a tavern owner charged with a scandalous crime involving the death of a free black woman; Judge Lucas discharged him after friends provided the $4,000 bail money. Hand accomplished in French. Laid paper, 16.5 cm by 10.0 cm. Undocketed, with no back endorsement, but with the word \"Judgment\" written in script diagonally across the note. In choice condition, very solid, and with only light folds. Accomplished in strong, thick pen. This note has a very interesting \"silver dollars...\" payable.
