This handsome series was printed by Rawdon, Wright, Hatch, & Edson, New-York from a $1-$1-$2-$3 sheet configuration. The $2 note from the series has a Type I Santa Claus vignette. This India paper proof, mounted on original cardstock, shows an especially boldly inked impression. With a brigantine at left and a lighthouse at right, Commerce sits at the shore in the vignette slightly right of top center. In an oval frame at lower left, a smartly dressed woman manages to display her fine jewelry while applying perfume behind her ear. The farmer at lower right holds a sickle and a newly cut sheaf of wheat. The $1 India paper proof plated in Haxby was from the British American Banknote Company Archives and sold last in the Krause March 2010 auction for $3,450.
