Some of the wealthiest families, however, adopting Hellenistic customs, decorated their tombs with monumental façades and massive tower-like monuments (nefesh). Four mausolea of this kind, called Absalom, Jehoshafat, Zechariah and Bene Hezir, survive in the Kidron Valley in Jerusalem; the first three probably date from the 1st century BCE to the 1st century CE, the last from the Hasmonean period. Absalom's nefesh is surmounted by an ashlar-built tholos, while that in Zechariah's tomb is decorated with Ionic half-columns supporting a pyramid.
