Tōdaiji is the head temple (honzan) of the Kegon sect, of which it has been a seat since its consecration in the 8th century ad. The name Tōdaiji refers to the temple's location on the eastern edge of Nara. It has occupied the same site for some 1200 years, during which time it has been one of the pre-eminent institutions of Japanese Buddhism. The modern temple is noted for its Daibutsu, a colossal bronze sculpture (h. 14.9 m) of the seated Buddha Rushana (Skt Vairocana), housed in the Daibutsuden (Great Buddha Hall; 57×47×52 m). The original Daibutsu was 16 m high, but was burnt and recast twice. The fact that Tōdaiji has been reconstructed several times with state sanction, as well as razed to the ground several times at the hands of sundry military powers, bespeaks the temple's profound association with both the good of the nation and its political realities.
