The Union came into possession of \"CSA\" watermarked banknote paper after the USSMercedita intercepted and seized the Confederate blockade-runner Bermuda on April 27, 1862. This paper was part of a shipment of supplies for printing currency. Interestingly, the Treasury Department used it for specimens of the second and third issues of fractional currency.
