West Plains, MO - Samuel Smith 50 Cents Reissued at Batesville October 8, 1862. PCGS Fine 15. A final, great Confederate-payable rarity and another intriguing, complex piece. The location of West Plains, MO., as printed on the note was in Howell County and accessible by several major roads. The note appears to be hand reissued at the upper left at \"Batesville\" (in Arkansas), but typical to the period, the penmanship is not distinctly legible. A small format note, similarly styled to the Oregon Co. reissued Green County note in the Newman Collection. Printed on the back of an 1855 handwritten document without imprint. Very fancy bordering is on three sides. The left end cartouche encloses a perpendicular FIFTY CENTS. The obligation under the FIFTY CENTS across, states the note was \"Payable in Confederate notes...\" Sharply signed by Smith. A very unusual note printed on reused paper and with the penned reissued location. This extreme rarity, like several Confederate-payable notes in the Newman Collection, is possibly unique.
