The Newman Collection contains a bonanza of full-color Wellstood, Hay & Whiting, New-York proofs, though most were offered and sold in our Newman VI auction in April 2015. Only the most important Obsolete banknote collections have had strong representations of such high-caliber color proofs. The Wisconsin Bank of Madison is very rare, and there are only a few proofs or Specimen notes in collectors' hands. This $1 \"C\" position proof printed on India paper and mounted on cardstock is a Superb Gem. The red tint favored by WHW covers the note with a micro-lettered ONE pattern, becoming deeper vermillion around the frame and upper right counter. At the left is wide vertical color strip with repeating textual denominations. The vignette in the center shows a gathering of men outside a barn with a young boy looking on. The white horse needs shoeing, but the focus of the discussion appears to be the long scythe held by the smithy. A beaver is seen at the base. The $2 proof from this series, PCGS Superb Gem New 67PPQ, realized $4,935 in the Newman Part VI sale. The denomination was not in the Krause Collection, and we believe the Newman $1 proofs are the only examples in private hands. Noted as \"Hole Punch Cancelled\" and \"Mounted on Cardstock\" as made. This is the second superb full-color $1 proof from this very rare bank. Ex: Eric P.
