Proof. PCGS Choice New 63 Apparent.  This Newman Part VII sale continues with further full color tinted Wellstood, Hay & Whiting imprint proofs from the sheets. They share many desirable qualities, such as their red tint with white outlined protectors, interesting and often rarely seen vignettes, and of course, the highest rarity. None of these proofs would be classified lower than Rarity-7 (1-5 known), and they are often the only examples known in private hands. This La Crosse County Bank $1 fits all those criteria and is printed on India paper mounted on cardstock. The overall style is similar to the Producers Bank of Janesville $1 proof, and the same top vignette is used on both. The red tint covers the note with a micro-lettered ONE pattern, becoming deeper vermillion around the frame and toward the upper left counter, which has an octagonal color die. A farmer pours slops into a trough for the pigs in the vignette at top center. At lower right, a seated allegorical female with caduceus holds up a large \"1.\" The denomination was not in the Krause collection, and we believe this is the only proof in private hands. Noted as \"HPC [Hole Punch Cancelled] as made\" and with some condition flaws noted as \"Edge Tear in UR Corner; Adhesive Stains.\" The flaws are near the top corners, but the vibrant color and contrasting vignettes are still marvelous.
