State of Maryland May 10, 1781 5 Shillings Fr. MD-130. PCGS Extremely Fine 40. A bold example from this late date and among the finest known from the entire issue. This superb 5 shillings is from a very striking series of notes printed by Frederick Green with red face border cuts and red Maryland arms on the back. Eight denominations were authorized, but few collectors have ever achieved a complete set. The notes were payable in specie per the obligation at a rate of 7 shillings 6 pence per dollar (making this in effect a $2/3 note). The vibrant colors and overall style make this popular with collectors. Few notes from the series observed exceed this extraordinary piece. It may only be surpassed by the one shilling note from the Boyd collection (Ford Part X: Lot 4626). Illustrated on page 46 of the color plates in the fifth edition of Newman's reference, The Early Paper Money of America. The face margins are complete.
