St. Charles, MO - Southern Bank of St. Louis, at their Bank in St. Charles $5 Contemporary Counterfeit July 22, 1859 MO-55 C26b. PCGS Fine 15 Apparent. A mostly complete example of this contemporary counterfeit. Crudely done, with many obvious diagnostics to condemn it. It copies the Toppan, Carpenter, Casilear & Co. imprint as well as the ABC monogram at the bottom right edge. At the top center is a steamboat. A male portrait is at the bottom left and Union at the lower right, but without the title on the column (see the genuine proof). Plate B. No. 256. With the false signatures of the first bank president, James Watson, and Jackson as commissioner. Grading notes \"Splits; Tape Repair on Back.\" There are few Missouri counterfeit types. Genuine notes traded at par across the state and were well known to the public. A pleasing example from the face with its glassine strip repair visible from the back. Ex: Eric P.
