(Jefferson City), MO - State of Missouri-Defence Warrants Uncut Sheet of $50-$20-$10-$5 June 25, 1864 Cr. UG3-4-5-6. Remainder. PCGS About New 53 Apparent. This four-subject presentation sheet of Second Series Defence Warrants comprises a complete denomination set from this extremely rare issue. It is unique to our knowledge, and its presentation endorsement on the face makes it one of the most historically important Missouri State currency items. The series was apparently included under the initial ordinance, though these are later notes with engraved \"June 25, 1864\" dates. Curiously, the obligation across the bottom center did not change the redemption date of December 1, 1862. The vertical denomination array is from highest to lowest, with the $50 at the top and the $5 at the bottom. Printed on white paper by R. P. Studley & Co., Lith. St. Louis. Each note has a similar layout showing the Missouri State Arms at left with crossed flags above. Titles curve across, and the obligation is along the bottom center. At the lower right of each denomination is different portrait with a counter in the upper right corner. From the $50 to the $5, the portraits are attributed as Governor Williard P. Hall, General John Pope, Brigadier General Isaac F. Shephard (formerly of the Missouri 19th Regiment who led the 51st Colored Infantry at the Siege of Vicksburg), and General Robert Allen. Blank lines are on the face for the secretary of state and auditor to sign. On the verso, there is space for the issuer's signature. Each face shows series letter \"C\" and is cancelled vertically in black pen. All the individual denominations are Rarity-11 (2-4) in Shull-Criswell and are much rarer than the First Series. This miracle of survival was saved as presentation piece. Endorsed across perpendicularly in red longhand (similar to the longhand on cancelled First Series notes observed) is the following: \"This Sheet of canceled Warrants is presented [to his] Excellency Governor Thomas C. Fletcher as a [reminder] of the dark pages in the History of the State. May better days be in store for her. A. Thompson Auditor Hn. [Ashley] [?] Chf. Clerk.\" Noted only with some \"Splits.\" The Ford Part X sale had only individual $5 and $10 notes, Lots 4352 and 4353, that were ex: Vacca lots 479 and 480. The $50 and $20 notes are exceedingly rare and only the 1992 Criswell plate notes are known to us. Individual notes are extremely important, but a complete denomination sheet like this is an epic piece of Missouri financial history. A trophy for the finest currency collection.
