Bindings a bit worn, with one backstrap coming loose, but generally sound and well above average for this title. Very good or better.      The Gentleman's Magazine was the brainchild of Edward Cave (1691-1754), who coined the term \"magazine\" for a monthly periodical and published this highly successful publication that was known for its wide-ranging coverage of topics an educated audience might find interesting. The Magazine was well-illustrated with high-quality engraved plates, which not infrequently depicted coins. These two volumes are notable for including not one but two different depictions of a Nova Constellatio copper, which are discussed by \"W.B\" in the 1786 volume and by \"T.W. Jee\" in the 1788 volume. Described in the first article as \"a halfpenny lately struck by the United States of America,\" it is assumed by the writer that they are regular federal issues. Cave published under the pseudonym of Sylvanus Urban, and the name outlived him, remaining the publisher's nom de plume through the Magazine's demise, after nearly two centuries, in 1922. Few instances are known of 18th-century American coins being depicted in contemporary printed illustrations, making these a desirable accompaniment to the actual coins. Estimate $500. Ex: Eric P.
