PCGS Very Good 10 Apparent.  An extremely rare note and series as listed in Hugh Shull's A Guidebook of Southern States Currency (known as Shull-Criswell). An intaglio engraved note by Murray, Draper, Fairman & Co. This note is from the initial series, and is in superior condition to the plated note in Shull-Criswell; that example is missing a large piece from the edge. The mill vignette at top center is well detailed. Cartouches in the intricate end panels show the denomination on a white background. Signed in pen by the public treasurer. Assigned a Rarity-11 rating (2-4) known. Our CAA September 2003 Raleigh collection did not contain any examples from the early Treasury note enactments. The Charles Affleck North Carolina collection (NASCA Van B. Elliott sale catalog, May 1, 1979) also lacked a note from the first series. The condition is superior to that seen on the majority of early North Carolina Treasury notes. Most of the few observed notes, of all types, generally average Good or so. Noted as \"Mounting on Back; Tape Repairs.\" A similar and superior grade Newman Collection note sold for $2,820 graded PCGS Very Good 10. Ex: Eric P.
