US-3-UNL PCGS Fine 15 Apparent.  This is a very rare Third Bank of the United States type and acted as a demand note, despite not receiving a Haxby listing for the series. The engraved style by Draper, Toppan & Longacre is like most of the notes for the Third Bank. At each end are three portraits of prominent Americans. Rittenhouse, Penn and Paine are at the left and Fulton, Franklin and Morris at the right. The stone bank building at the top center is above the title. The note has a fabulous reddish-brown color back, showing William Penn is in the center surrounded by the original fourteen state emblems. Intricate lathe work panels complete this back. We know of this type as a proof (see Smythe Sale #156, November 1996, lot 1703). The notes were supposedly created to facilitate cotton transactions in New Orleans by Bank of the United States agents.
