A relatively large number of 1859-O dollars were minted with 360,000 pieces struck. Apparently a large number were set aside by silver depositors and bullion dealers at the time of production. Approximately equal numbers of circulated and Uncirculated examples are known today, with the large number of Mint State dollars explained by the Treasury hoard coins released in 1962.
