Below, a maze of buildings constitutes the town. The palace complex was built along a north south axis over a period of c. 100 years. Raja Man Singh (reg c. 1590–1614) built the original palace at the southernmost end, a central courtyard surrounded by a rectangle of even, uniform structures. Below the palace in a funerary monument are some of the earliest surviving Rajasthani wall paintings. They lack inscriptions but relate formally to late 16th-century miniatures from Mewar and Amer. Further additions were made to the palace in the 17th and 18th centuries. Two sets of courtyards and structures, showing rich cross-fertilization between the Mughal and Rajput styles, were added along the northern axis by Mirza Raja Jai Singh (reg 1623–67). The third enclosure from the south contains the Diwan-i Am, or hall of public audience (1623–7), while the second enclosure from the south contains the king's private quarters (1635). When these were built, the original palace of Man Singh was converted into women's quarters (zenana). The king's quarters contain a hall of private audience and are surmounted by the lavishly decorated Jas Mahal. Gardens are laid out below, adjacent to the Moota Lake. Between the two courts constructed by Jai Singh I, Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II (reg 1699–1744) built the gate known as Ganesha Pol, notable for its mosaic decoration and lattice screens (see Palace, fig. 7). Jai Singh II also added the fourth, northernmost courtyard, its plain, uniform walls adding to the palace's fortifications. In 1727 Jai Singh II founded his new capital at Jaipur, and Amer was abandoned from 1728.
