Canton, MO - Bank of the State of Missouri, at Canton $10 Aug. 1, 1859 MO-60 G56a SENC. PCGS Fine 15 Apparent. The first of five genuine branch notes from this rare branch payable series. According to Haxby's listings for the rechartered 1857 title, ten branches issued this design type (Haxby design type 10Ab) and the Newman Collection has half of them, making this an impressive gathering never seen before at auction or in a private collection to our knowledge. This is an exceedingly rare, possibly unique, Canton branch-issued note in a pleasing grade. Slightly later than the previous, the note was printed from new plates with imprint of the Draper, Toppan, Longacre & Co. Phila. & NY at bottom center and an additional \"ABC\" monogram tucked in above the left portion of the title. A narrowly engraved red tint with COUNTERSIGNED & REGISTERED outlined in white is above the vignette and the \"Com'r\" signature space to the right. The layout is similar to that on the previous, with the Zebulon Pike steamboat, townspeople, and Native American at top center. Clark and Boone portraits are at left and right respectively between \"X\" blocks at the ends. The title is across in one line, with the script engraved \"St. Louis\" above to the left; the word THE, from the bank title has moved from above to below the vignette. Surcharged with a red oval stamp showing the words RE-ISSUED / S. PRICE (the lettering is indistinct on the last name) at lower right. Plate B. No. 1890. Signed by A.S. Robinson and R. A. Barnes. Countersigned by commissioner Geo. Penn as \"ass't\" commissioner. PCGS notes \"Small Edge Tears,\" which are trivial. The branch for this type was not in the 1981 Vacca sale, and any issued note with this design is very rare. Nearly all the genuine notes from the bank's series were redeemed.
