PCGS About New 53 Apparent.  This is a rare odd denomination type from the Act of October 20, 1837 series. Not only is it fully signed, issued and with full endorsements on the blue back, but it is also a serial number 1 note. We know of another serial number 1 that is hand-dated June 21, 1838 and is cancelled heavily on the face. Engraved plates by Jno. V. Childs, N. Orleans for both sides, and in a larger format than a normal banknote. An eagle is at top center over the titles and obligation. Commerce is seated in a harbor at left, and the right end has a river god seated on a bank. The ornate blue back is composed of different dies. Noted as \"Pen Cancelled\" with \"Ink Erosion; Small Repair on Back.\" We cannot explain the anomaly of two serial number one notes.
