Foundations for a number of structures dating from the Asuka–Hakuhō period have been unearthed, among them a pagoda (tō), an image or main hall (kondō), central gate (chūmon), south main gate (nandaimon), roofed corridor (kairō) and lecture hall (kōdō). Wood imprints indicate that the eaves of the lecture hall bore fan-shaped rafters (ōgidaruki). The pagoda's central pillar (shinbashira) appears to have been sunk c. 3 m into the podium (kidan), to rest in hard-packed earth, an example of a standard construction technique of the period. Indeed the ground plan of Shitennōji is regarded as one of the principal Asuka–Hakuhō period models for temple construction and is called the Shitennōji-style plan. The structures are arranged along a north south axis defined by the two gates of access the south main gate and the central gate and the lecture hall. The focal buildings of the temple the pagoda and the image hall are also aligned on this axis; the pagoda is the first structure north of the central gate and the image hall is behind it. A roofed corridor connects the central gate with the lecture hall and establishes a central precinct within which the pagoda and image hall the heart of the temple are contained. North of the lecture hall and outside the central precinct are a belfry (shōrō), a sūtra repository (kyōzō), monks' quarters (sōbō) and a refectory (jikidō). This format differed from those of Asukadera (c. 590s) and Hōryūji (c. 607).
