It was regarded as the mother church of all Christendom, as is made clear by the inscription omnium urbis et orbis ecclesiarum mater et caput, which appears twice on the huge bases of the columns framing the central doorway to the present building. The Liber Pontificalis attributes the foundation to Emperor Constantine. The church was built on the east side of the Celian Hill, inside the Aurelian Wall near the Porta Asinaria, marking the centre of the Lateran complex. Constantine did not build the cathedral on the edge of the city by chance: he owned property there and acquired additional space after 313 by demolishing the barracks of the horse guards, who had apparently supported his rival Maxentius (reg 306–12); and as two-thirds of Roman citizens were still pagan, it was important not to provoke their sensibilities by building the church closer to the centre of Rome. This was the first great church within the city walls, and together with its baptistery, perhaps the first in the West, it became a monumental and impressive construction, comparable in size and decoration with the most splendid public buildings of the city, though it was sited far from the city centre.
