The building's name (literally 'Crown Palace') is a corruption of the queen's title, Mumtaz-i Mahal ('Chosen of the Palace'). She died in Khandesh giving birth to her 14th child, while accompanying the emperor on a military campaign. First entombed at Burhanpur, her body was brought to Agra in 1632, when the Taj Mahal was under construction. The tomb is set within a walled garden designed on the conventional chār-bāgh (four-plot) plan with a monumental entrance gateway on the south. The plan is symmetrical; a broad water channel with marble fountains on the north south axis serves as a reflecting pool for the tomb itself; stone-paved pathways divide and subdivide the quarters. In the Taj Mahal complex a raised pond of white marble reached by stairs on all sides is placed at the central point. The tomb is situated at the northern extreme of the complex, overlooking the Yamuna River. On the west of the tomb is a mosque and on the east an identical building often called the javāb (Pers.: 'answer'), which was built for symmetry and which served as an assembly hall ( jam‛āt khāna). These structures and the walls and gateways are constructed of red sandstone, which serves as a foil for the whiteness of the tomb. All three structures stand on a red sandstone platform (l. 295.83, w. 111.2, h. 01.22 m (height above garden)). The tomb is square in plan (57 m on each side), with its angles chamfered, and stands on a white marble plinth (l. 100.05, w. 100.05, h. 5.79 m). The superstructure is dominated by a grand bulbous dome set on a high drum and culminating in a lotus motif and metal finial. The domes of four open pavilions (chatrīs) are of a more traditional hemispherical form. The total height of the tomb is 74.22 m; the height of the dome (including the drum) is 44.4 m. The four minarets (h. 40.2 m), which lead the eye upward, rise higher than the domed pavilions but not the full height of the dome. . The fine white marble was quarried at Makrana in Rajasthan, the inlay work includes lapis lazuli, jasper, agate, chalcedony, cornelian, jade, onyx, coral, amethyst and turquoise. One of the building's surprises is the numerous color contrasts that emerge from a distant impression of whiteness.
