The fourth nawab, Asaf ud-Daula (reg 1775–97), transferred the capital there from Faizabad, a move that rapidly transformed the city. Originally appointed as state governors by the Mughals, the nawabs soon became hereditary rulers. During the 80 years that Lucknow was the nawabi capital, a series of complexes was built along the south bank of the Gumti to the east of the Machchi Bhavan fort. The most impressive complex is the Bara (Great) Imambara, constructed by Asaf al-Daula in 1784. By faith the nawabs were Shi‛ites, and the Bara Imambara was used during the annual Muharram rite of that sect. The main building is a colossal vaulted hall richly decorated with carved stucco. The building also served as the burial place of Asaf ud-Daula and his wife. Adjacent are a mosque and a stepwell, the latter known as the Baoli Palace. Outside the complex is the Rumi Darvaza, a massive and heavily ornamented gate.
