St. Louis, Missouri Territory - Bank of St. Louis (1st) $5 June 18, 1817 MO-45 G24. PCGS Very Fine 35 Apparent. The Bank of St. Louis $5 denomination is a quintessential early American currency note. The beaver-trapping vignette represents the fur trade integral to the economic development of St. Louis and the emergence of its commercial significance. It is a symbol that reminds us of St. Louis prior to Missouri's territorial bank formations and the handwritten scrip \"bons,\" backed by the deposit of beaver pelts or other merchandise. The type also influenced the style of the 1821 State of Missouri Loan Office $1 notes, engraved as proofs by Richard Harrison, and the final issued $1 notes. Printed on red fiber paper by Leney and Rollinson. A top center, a barefoot Native American hunter in finely detailed buckskins prepares to remove a beaver from a trap. In the background are richly detailed rapids and a view of the landscape upstream. The Gothic title below the vignette is across the center with the obligations, and the location is underneath. Finely engraved end panels are similar to those of the other denominations in the series, with a beautiful moir? pattern at left and a shaded lathe work pattern at right, each displaying a differently styled perpendicular FIVE in a cartouche. Plate A. No. 1774. Signed by the unscrupulous John B. N. Smith as cashier and S. Hammond as president. Noted only with some \"Mounting Remnants on Back.\" A superb note. The last example of this type sold at auction was the unique $5 proof, formerly from the Leney & Rollinson archive book, sold as Ford Part VIII: lot 1172 (at $2,760). It was cataloged again, along with other important Missouri proofs, in Stack's June 29, 2010, 52 Collection Part I Sale: Lot 5382, and sold for $6,037.50. This is a sharp-looking, fully issued note and significant like that fine proof.
