The site was first settled in the 9th century BCE. In 146 BCE during the Third Punic War it was destroyed along with nearby Carthage but later prospered under Roman rule. After the Muslim conquest in the 7th century ad and the founding of Kairouan, Tunis became second city of the region. The Zaytuna ('Olive tree') Mosque, founded in 732, was rebuilt between 856 and 864 by Abu Ibrahim Ahmad, sixth ruler of the Aghlabid dynasty. Following the Hilalian nomadic invasions in the mid-11th century, Tunis grew at the expense of Kairouan. In 1535 the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V took possession of Tunis, but in 1574 it was taken by the Ottomans for the third and final time and ruled for them by a series of beys, or governors, until the French protectorate was declared in 1881. During the period of Ottoman rule many other mosques were built in the city. The medina, or old city, retains much of its traditional aspect, with picturesque narrow streets and vaulted souks, and preserves many fine houses and palaces, such as the Dar al-Bey and Dar Hasan; they are irregular structures comprising patios surrounded by rooms. The Bardo Palace, founded by the Hafsids and enlarged by the beys of Tunis, stands in a park in the northern suburbs; it now houses the Archaeological Museum. The European quarter, which developed to the east of the medina after 1881, contains a variety of buildings in European styles.
