This is the fourth and final Hortiz issued promissory note hand accomplished in French. It is dated from St. Louis and issued by and signed by J. H. Hortitz to Charles Sanguinet. Charles Sanguinet, an explorer and fur trader, emigrated from Quebec, and settled in St. Louis in 1775. A former partner of Manuel Lisa, he became part of the Missouri Fur Company. Each piastre of Current Money was equivalent to 2-1/2 llivres of pelts. Laid paper, 9.0 cm by 6.5 cm. Back docketed (or partially endorsed?) Billet de hertize [Hortiz] / $32-0-0 and No. 12 / Mr. hortiz/ No. 1. This is a very boldly penned deerskin exchange used to settle accounts. Noted by PCGS are some \"Stains\" which is trivial age toning. Like all of these, quite unique and interesting. The condition is excellent. French Transcription : je payere al'ordre de Mr. Charles Sanguinet, trente deux piastres argant Courant, a raison de deux livres et demy peaux de Chevreuil par piastre Reglement denos Comptes jus qu'a ce jour, St. Louis 22, juin 1807. jh [Horttiz] Translation: I will pay to the order of Mr. Charles Sanguinet, thirty-two dollars of current money, at the rate of two and a half pounds of deerskins per dollar in settlement of our accounts up to today, St. Louis, June 22, 1807.
