It contains the Old and Middle Kingdom rock-cut tombs of provincial governors, local princes, commanders of military and commercial expeditions to Nubia and New Kingdom officials. The cemetery remained in use until the Roman period. The Old Kingdom tomb of Harkhuf (A8) is a simple, undecorated room with four pillars; on the façade are important historical and autobiographical inscriptions referring to Harkhuf's three expeditions to various regions of Africa on behalf of the 6th Dynasty kings Merenre (reg c. 2256–c. 2246 BCE) and Pepy II (reg c. 2246–c. 2150 BCE). The tomb of Pepynakhte/Heqaib (A9) consists of a courtyard with two conical pillars framing the entrance to a small room decorated with a few engraved scenes of mediocre quality. Associated tombs belonging to relatives of Heqaib include the adjacent tomb of his son Sabni, which is decorated with painted reliefs of accomplished workmanship. Another important Old Kingdom tomb is that of Mekhu and Sabni (A1), which has a large pillared hall and steep causeways descending to the river.
