Jefferson City, MO - C. W. Brand 25 Cents April 2, 1862. PCGS Very Fine 25 Apparent. A very rare and unusual Confederate-payable and styled scrip note dated from Jefferson City, April 2, 1862. At this time, the Union controlled the capital city, and the Confederate government was in exile and on the move in southwestern Missouri counties. Printed on brown paper without imprint, but the size and style are similar to New Orleans notes from the period. A military group called \"National Guards of Jefferson City\" (which changed to a fire brigade in 1858), in 1861 became a second military group called \"Home Guards,\" serving the Confederacy under the Fourteenth Louisiana Regiment for the duration of the war. They reorganized as a fire brigade in November 1863 and Brand was elected treasurer in 1867. (A History of the Proceedings in the City of New Orleans, by E. C. Wharton, 1881, page 240.) A very small dog and safe vignette is at top center, the title is across, and red 25 CTS protector is below. The left end has the denomination in a fancy cartouche, and the right end shows a standing Native American princess and crouching Ceres. Payable \"in Confederate Notes\" with a very sharp signature and fully issued. Noted with \"Minor Mounting Remnants on Back,\" but from the face a well-margined, beautiful note.
