Only a handful of National Banks along the west coast were organized under the provisions of the original National Banking Act of 1863. California in particular was \"hard money\" country, where silver and especially gold were the preferred mediums of exchange and where paper currency was suspect, even notes guaranteed by the far off federal authorities. The preference for gold spurred legislation in 1870 which allowed the establishment of National Gold Banks. A total of ten institutions were chartered as National Gold Banks, all save one in California. (The tenth, in Massachusetts, elected not to circulate notes before winding up its affairs shortly after it opened.) The face designs of the Gold Bank Notes were identical to those of all other National notes save for the notation \"Redeemable in Gold Coin\" at the top, but the reverses were completely different from other National notes, with a central vignette of assorted gold coins. Even more distinctive was the paper used to print these notes, which, in almost all cases, bore a yellow tint used only for this series. When the government resumed specie payments in January of 1879, making all federal currency redeemable in gold or silver, the utility of the Gold Bank notes disappeared, as they no longer enjoyed a preferred status. By 1880, enabling legislation was passed allowing National Gold Banks to convert to regular National Banks, a privilege exercised by all of the surviving Gold Banks, which effectively ended the printing of these notes. Although the census of surviving National Gold Bank notes contains more than 600 pieces, virtually all are well circulated, with the average grade Very Good or so. This nicer than average National Gold Bank Note comes from the Eric P. Newman Collection. The red overprint is bold, the gold coin vignette on the reverse is nicely printed, and the minor flaws, \"Small Edge Spits and Tears,\" mentioned on the holder as the cause of the Apparent grade are nothing more than the trivial defects so often found on this much in demand type.
