His head is turned, looking back toward a couple in the background who are walking together under an umbrella/parasol, closer to the water.  It looks like he's trying to avoid being seen by them.  Between him and the couple, in front of the dunes, is a beach chair and some pillows.  To his left is a long mound of sand.  There's a box and an open book on top of the mound and the words 'Sacred to the memory of Violet Bal(indistinct after that).  The bottom of the page has been cut off, but the tops of printed works are visible, possibly the caption.
