Beginning in 1942, Krüeger brought together an impressive group of Jewish artists, engravers, printers, and technicians, as well as professional counterfeiter Solomon Smolianoff. These men were asked to complete what is today popularly known as Operation Bernhard, one of the most successful counterfeiting schemes of all time. The artisans created over $600 million worth of British pound notes. The replicas were of sufficient quality that Britain was forced to recall and reissue notes with added security measures.
