(St. James), MO - Thos. James-Maramec Iron Works $5 Feb. 1, 1869. PCGS Choice About New 55 Apparent. A final note issued by the Maramec Iron Works, beautifully engraved and printed by the National Bank Note Company. This was the bottom note from the cut, matched serial 777-numbered sheet that has been in the Newman Collection for decades. The face style is similar to the others printed on the four-subject sheet layout, with the frame with corner flourishes and bottom center guilloche in brown, but without the numeral protector. At the top center is the famous Obsolete note vignette known as The Horse Fair, engraved by James Smillie after the original painting by Rosa Bonheur. Interestingly, this painting represents a Parisian horse market and is on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. A standing mechanic is at left under an arced FIVE. At lower right is another well-coiffed young woman from the retinue of National Banknote vignettes; above are complex Durand patent \"5\" dies. The engraved \"Wm. James\" signature is at the bottom. The entire area of the intricate is filled with a carpet-like pattern, obligation in center, and flanking ornate \"5\" dies. Noted with a \"Small Edge Tear at Left of Center,\" which is hard to see. A stunning layout and one of only handful we have seen in three decades. An illustrious, artistically designed note with a pedigree to match its beauty. Ex: Eric P.
