Oregon/Green County, MO - Barley & Wright 50 Cents 1862. PCGS Very Fine 25 Apparent. A very rare scrip payable in \"Confederate Notes or Missouri Bonds,\" which was reissued in an additional county location to the northwest. Oregon County, in the extreme southern portion of the state, bordered Confederate Arkansas. Green (or Greene) County was to the northwest, closer to the secessionist counties by the Indian Territories. The 1861 Battle of Wilson's Creek in Green county was an important Confederate victory. Union General Nathaniel Lyon was killed (the first fallen Union general in the war). The convention in Neosho passed secession shortly after. This is a small-format note printed on brown rag paper without imprint. Vine borders are at the top and bottom, an ornate wide border is at the left, and a narrower ornamental border is at right. The obligation is across the center with a bolded FIFTY CENTS and the payable text underneath. Signed by the issuer. No. 82, and matching the Schingoethe catalog illustration. The note is ex: Western Reserve collection, part of the three-note lot 504, purchased by Mr. and Mrs. Schingoethe attending the sale. Noted with a \"Small Edge Tear and Repair at Top Left,\" performed with a small back corner hinge. Very boldly printed and attractive. An illustrious pedigree chain continues here.
