This was undoubtedly incorporated into the initial building campaign in the 11th century. The walls, 2.80 m thick, are revetted in ashlar (moyen appareil ). Originally the keep was divided by wooden floors into a ground-floor cellar and three upper levels, which were lit by round-headed windows. A stairway in the tower provided access to the first floor of the keep; from here, ramps and spiral staircases within the walls served the upper floors as well as the cellar. An apsidal chapel (St Salleboeuf) was situated in the tower above the stairway. Chimney remains pose the question of the introduction of this feature into castle architecture. The building phases of the donjon, and their chronology, are disputed. Finally an enormous curtain wall with a moat and single gate (the Porte Royale) was built all around the promontory, encircling not only the recent enclosure wall but also the college of Notre-Dame (now St Ours) and the palace at the far end of the site. In the 15th century, outbuildings forming an entrance block with a new donjon (the Tour Neuve or Ronde) were constructed along the outside of the northern face of the enclosure wall. They were probably designed as part of a new outer enclosure, of which only the north-eastern barbican (La Marche) seems to have been completed. A new structure was built over the old 13th-century Porte Royale. Another new tower (Le Martelet) with dungeons was inserted between the enclosure and curtain walls, and a new wall between these created two new enclosures to the west and south.
