St. Louis, Missouri Ty. - Bank of St. Louis (1st) $10 Mar. 18, 1817 MO-45 G26. PCGS Extremely Fine 45 Apparent. This is one of the most important Missouri notes in the sale and justifiably one of Eric Newman's favorites. An amazing opportunity for collectors to bid upon a second beautifully engraved rarity with the custom vignette of early St. Louis, which he discovered and dated to 1814. This $10 issued note is very rare, with few known to us. All are closely held in advanced collections or in museums. They have rarely traded hands at public auction: The last issued $10 note sold was likely the example from the complete eight-denomination set ($1 to $100) in the 1996 Western Reserve Historical Society sale that realized $26,400. Even the Herb and Martha Schingoethe Collection had few notes from this Bank of St. Louis series (their $5 note was restored; ex: Burgett collection via 1990 NASCA-Smythe Memphis sale) and did not have an example of this significant type. Printed on red fiber banknote paper by Leney & Rollinson with layout and designs as last. At top center is the titled Partial View of St. Louis, with identifiable buildings and landmarks from the period: the earliest known view of St. Louis. The title is underneath the vignette with obligations across and location below. Ends show a fine moir? pattern at left and lathe work shading at right with differently styled perpendicular \"TEN\" denominations. Plate A. No. 773. Signed by John B. N. Smith as cashier and S. Hammond as bank president. Noted with \"Small Edge Tears.\" These are tiny nicks in the margins, some barely touching the frame lines, do not interfere with the majestic appearance of this crisp note. Fully issued and among the finest of very few known. The estimate is merely that: an estimate. After this distinguished note is sold, its new curator acquires one of the great Obsolete currency types from any state, era, or artistic style. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society \n\n
