PCGS Fine 12 Apparent.  This State Bank, Charleston type is exceedingly rare and is one of the earliest notes from the state. It may be illustrated here for the first time. It is cited in Haxby and in the first Austin Sheheen 1960 monograph (#200, Rarity-15). However, in the comprehensive South Carolina book follow-up by Mr. Sheheen, the note is neither cited nor described. It was printed on laid paper favored in the period from a plate with strong details; we believe the note is a genuine plate position U example. Signed by John Dawson and John C. Faber. A shield showing a clipper ship, a sheaf of wheat, and flowers is at top right. A denomination panel is at the left end. Though there are five \"X\" pen cancels on the face, we consider these redemption notations, and the note is not marked bad or counterfeit in any manner. The blank back has an \"H & W\" endorsement. PCGS notes: \"Pen Cancelled\" and \"Ink Erosion and Damage.\" Once again, this is an important historical banknote from the Newman Collection and worthy of further study.
