The structure is square in plan (16.76 m to a side) and crowned by a shallow dome, the whole rising to a height of 18.29 m. Red sandstone is the main building material with contrasting bands of white marble. The effectiveness of this combination led to its use in many later buildings. The façades of the gateway are similar, each with a pointed horseshoe arch (īwān) rising nearly the full height of the building. The arch is edged on the intrados with a spearhead fringe and is supported by nook-shafts. On either side of the central arch, the façade is divided into two registers creating the impression of a two-storey structure. The upper register has a pair of rectangular panels on each side, outlined with white marble and inset with miniature niches. The lower register has large arched niches (one screened and the other blind) that echo the design of the main portal. The sumptuous carved decoration of the exterior includes calligraphic, floral and geometric motifs. The interior has graceful squinches supporting the dome. It has been suggested that Seljuk builders (possibly migrants fleeing the Mongol invasion) had a hand in the ‛Alaاi Darvaza. However, it is the extensions of Iltutmish that can properly claim west Asian pedigree; the ‛Alaاi Darvaza is an authentic Indian creation, integral to the evolution of Indo-Islamic architecture.
