PCGS Fine 12 Apparent.  This rustically printed note is quite a historic rarity. The 1858 Deseret Currency Association acted essentially as a bank. The Association's notes, typeset in three distinct series and later engraved from copper plates, were the next phase in the evolution of Mormon paper currency after the \"Valley Notes.\" In 1858, there was mounting concern in the Mormon community that the United States government was going to intervene in Utah with Johnston's army. There were no direct battles, but there were actions, guerilla incidents and casualties from the one-year \"Mormon War.\" Because of hoarding by the population, the lack of specie in circulation to facilitate commerce made these notes necessary. This Series A note is very rare and is hand-signed by Brigham Young at the lower right. A typeset note, printed at the Deseret News office, without imprint, on frail white paper. The simple design uses different fonts, and has titles across the top and bolded \"2\" at the right end. Flanking DESERET at top center are small vignettes of baled commercial goods and a plow. The obligation is interesting as this was payable \"in Live Stock.\" Apparent, with this note cited as having \"Edge Damage; Tape on Back.\" Even though the Brigham Young signature is blurry, a typeset note is seldom encountered, and this example presents an excellent opportunity. These notes are never easy to estimate due to their scarcity. The Very Fine 25 Apparent $1 denomination from the series had a strong signature and realized $11,750 in the Newman Collection Part VI sale in April 2015. This example will represent the historic series nicely in any collection. Ex: Eric P.
