It was completed in 1571 under the supervision of Mirak Mirza Ghiyath. It has often been said that it owes much to the patronage of Haji Begum, Humayun's widow. There is no evidence to support this, however, and it is more likely that the project benefited from the interest of Humayun's son Akbar. The tomb is situated in the centre of a series of four-plot gardens (Ind.-Pers. chār-bāgh), with shallow water channels, pools and paved pathways laid out symmetrically on all sides. Garden settings with channels of water were employed by Babur (reg 1526–30), but in Humayun's tomb such a scheme is used for the first time with a mausoleum. The garden complex is enclosed by high walls with large gateways. The tomb is constructed of red sandstone and faced with colored slate. The lavish use of white marble to outline panels and arches was an important precedent for subsequent Mughal architecture. The tomb building stands on a high double plinth (base level 1.5 m high, upper level 6.1 m high); the upper plinth is lined with arched alcoves on all sides. The tomb itself (47.54 m sq) consists of four octagonal structures clustered around the central domed chamber, a scheme already used in Iranian secular architecture of the 15th century. All the façades are essentially alike. They are dominated by a high central portal and the lofty marble-faced dome. The octagonal wings flanking the portals are two-storey and have small arched portals and alcoves. These portions of the building are crowned by chatrīs. The entrance is located in the south portal; the other sides are closed by stone screens. The cenotaph of Emperor Humayun is in the central chamber. Above the cenotaph is the double dome; this construction technique allowed for impressive proportions externally with relatively little weight, while the interior remained appropriate in proportion to the space covered. The dome rests on a drum with decorative inlay. The rooms surrounding the central domed chamber contain cenotaphs of the royal family as well as those of several late Mughal emperors. Passages connect these rooms to each other and to the central chamber. In the second storey is another series of interconnected rooms, some of which overlook the main space under the dome.
