St. Louis, MO - Exchange Bank of St. Louis, at St. Louis $10 May 1, 1863 MO-10 UNL. PCGS Very Fine 20 Apparent. There are no fully signed and issued notes from the Exchange Bank known to us. If the Bald, Cousland & Co, imprint proof sheets had not surfaced in the 1990 ABN Sale, there would be few examples of any kind from this bank to study. This is an exceedingly rare and important note, the closest to an issued example we have seen. Not signed by the officers, but it has the home office of \"St. Louis\" and date written in, and it was properly countersigned by Geo. Penn as the \"ass't\" commissioner. Printed by the American Bank Note Company with their full imprint at bottom center. This series and type is a complete departure in appearance from the previous notes in this sale. The $10 plate layout originated by Bald, Cousland & Co. was carried forward, but without a full tint; there is the ABC monogram as used on the previous type. Vignettes show a portrait of Thomas Jefferson flanked by \"10\" dies at the center; a female harvester, Kate, holding a sickle and sunhat at lower left; and a young woman blowing on a dandelion at lower right. The counter surrounds in the upper corners and the protector device outlining a white \"Ten Dollars\" are in bright vermillion. Plate D. No. 7072. Noted as Stained\" and with \"Edge Splits and Small Repairs.\" The progression of three $10 engraved plate types is interesting. This was examined by Dr. Glenn E. Jackson in a 1979 Paper Money magazine article when this design type was used on an American Bank Note Company-printed souvenir card. The Kate vignette is titled and patented by Bald, Cousland & Co.
