(Jefferson City), MO - State of Missouri-Defence Warrant $10 Jany. 23, 1862 Cr. UG1. PCGS Extremely Fine 45. Although eligible Missouri voters in February 1861 overwhelmingly opted for the State to remain in the Union, the population was deeply divided on the question of secession. Following the attack on Fort Sumter in April of that same year, Confederate and Union forces pitted \"brother against brother\" in their battles within the State, and each set up their own governments, with the Union controlling the key city of St. Louis, and by May 14, gaining command of the capital of Jefferson City. The majority of the Confederate legislature fled to Boonville, then Neosho until driven from the state and governing in exile from Marshall, Texas as of the latter part of 1863. The Union government issued a few types of Defence Warrants and a series of Union Military Bonds. The first series Defence Warrants were authorized by the Ordinance of October 18, 1861. They were backed by stock in the Bank of the State of Missouri, were receivable for taxes, and were to be retired by December 31, 1862, per the engraved obligation. Only a few signed and cancelled notes like this example are observed. Earlier than the related Cr. UG2, this Cr. UG1 $10 has a written, instead of engraved, date and is larger in size. Lithographed on white paper by A. McClean lith. St. Louis. At the left is the Missouri State Arms, and at the right, a facing portrait of a girl. Titles and obligations are across. The green TEN protector has a squared-off font. Signed by Oliver, the secretary of state, and Mosely, auditor for the state. The issuing signature on the verso is that of Melville Sawyer as \"Paymaster M. S. M. [Missouri State Militia].\" Endorsed across the face in red as \"Cancelled\" and noted as: \"Slit Cancelled.\" There are very few sales citations over the past few decades for this type. The Shull Criswell Rarity-10 (5-15) rating is accurate, but in private collections, that number is closer to five than to 15. The last sales record we found was the Ford Part X: Lot 4350 (ex: NASCA Vacca Sale: Lot 476, 1992 Criswell plate note) in similar grade, which realized $1,725. This is well margined on three sides, vibrant, and just lightly handled. A key Missouri military currency issue and type, offered occasionally in advanced collections like Eric P. Newman's.
