The chapel was built within the royal palace on the Ile-de-la-Cité, and its double purpose, reliquary church and palace chapel, explains the arrangement in two storeys, the upper one communicating with the royal apartments. Attached to the Sainte-Chapelle was a structure known as the Trésor des Charles (destr.). In plan it was a miniature version of the chapel, but it had three storeys, the lower two serving as sacristies to the chapel, the top storey housing the royal archives. Although the amount expended by Louis is known (40,000 livres), the name of the architect and the date that work began (between 1239 and 1243) are not. The chapel had been completed by the time of the double consecration on 26 April 1248. The traditional attribution of the design to Pierre de Montreuil can no longer be maintained; the master mason may have been Jean de Chelles, but Thomas de Cormont has also been suggested. The chapel's present state is the result of the important restorations begun in 1837 by Felix-Jacques Duban and Jean-Baptiste-Antoine Lassus, who were soon joined by Viollet-le-Duc. It displays an exemplary quality in its fidelity not only to the architecture but also to the sculpture, stained glass and painted decoration.
